ToursuenelT, the late famous Russian novelist, did not believe in revealed re ligion. He left an illegitimate daughter, ttho is divorced from her husband. A suspicious vessel in the Delaware river, at Philadelphia, supposed to con tain amis for the Haytien insurgents, is lies. The more decent Republicans of New York are preparing to reform matters by wipiBg their party out. This is the only road to reform, says the Atlanta f'onMtulioH. The Chicago Inter-Ocean . rebukes (Jen. Weaver. Greenback candidate tor lioveruor of Iowa, because he assails Senator Allisfon, whose wife died tragi cally about a month ago. Rear" Admiral Pierce Crosby, U. S. X., commanding the naval torces on the Asiatic station, has telegraphed to the acting Secretary of the Navy asking to be relieved and to be placed on the re tired list. - ; A novelty in the way of campaign documents is to be scattered through Massachusetts by Butler's managers. It is headed "regular Republican tick et,1' and is printed in ballot form on an imitation of tanned human skin. . : A friend of Mr. Carlisle tells the Washington Star that Carlisle will be nominated for Speaker on the first bal lot. Randall, he thinks, will get but fifty votes, or forty-six less than the uumber necessary to nominate him. 1 Senator Edmunds, at the Philadel phia Episcopal Convention, said, in de clining a nomination for the Presidency of the Convention, that he was not ''a' candidate for President for this or any other place at this or any other time.' - Archbishop Gibbons left Baltimore yesterday for New York, whence he he will sail on to-morrow morning on the steamship Normandie for Havre, France. On his arrival in Rome he will present to the Pope a handsome sum of money, the gift of Catholics of his archdiocese.. Mrs Liangtry has returned to London irom Paiis and sailed for New York Saturday in the Guiou steamer Oregon. Mrs Langtry will bo accompanied on her tour by her mother, Mrs. Lo Bre ton. A cabin has been specially pre pared on Board the Oregon, and fitted with every luxury. . . The New York World states that the Boston Herald is on the lookout for the palatable method of eating crow. Ben Butler has never professed to be much ot of an artist in culinary line, but he can probably serve up the dainty dish in a manner to suit even the aesthetic taste of the editor of the Herald. . , n An attachment has been obtained in the supreme couH of New York city against the property in Virginia of Newcomb, Buchanan & Co., of Louis ville, oe of the largest whiskey houses in the country, who failed, two years ago, for $2,700,000, and have paid off "a million of their indebtedness since. It is understood that Postmaster General Gresham, in his report, will discuss the advisability of increasing the weight of letters from one -half ounce to one ounce, the rate ot postage for the same to remain as at present. It is not at ail improbable that he will jre- commend a one cent rate of postage for local letters. The Republican candidate for Gov ernor of Iowa is. even worso off than Judsro Hrmdlv. We read that while peaking recently he was taken with an epileptic fit, and stood motionless and dumb before thie assembly for sev: ral minutes. When he was about to fall assistance was rendered by mem bers of his committe on the stand. There was considerable excitement among the audience, and much sym pathy was expressed for Mr. Sherman, wliose official and political labors have evidently undermined bis health. , james, hi .A V n,lttrTT ,v T i VOL. Tho attendance from this city at the Baptist Association, which convenes to-morrow at Still Bluff, in Pender county, will be a large one. The steam er John Dawson took up this morning a goodly number, roughly estimated at about one hundred, and others will probably go up to-morrow and Thurs- i Jay. ; : Ncwbern and Wilmington. Mr. Matt. Manly, of Newbern, in a card published in the Journal, claims that the Newbern market for cotton is not properly quoted, because of im proper classification. Mr. Manly says: We still have as formerly the highest market in North Carolina, except Wilmington, and better than Wilming ton when the charges are considered. Cotton is quoted on Saturday fast in Newbern, in the commercial columns of the Journal, at U cents for middliug. which Mr. Manly claims should have been 9 13-16. On tjie same day it was oflicially quoted here at 104 cents for middling, at which price nearly a thou sand bales were sold. Here' is a differ ence of 5-10 in fayor of thi3 market, at Mr. Manly's own figures, for that gen tleman to work on. j Education at Teacheys. A correspondent at Teacheys, !in Duj plin county, tells us that the good people of that section are awaking to ,ne needs and necessities of ! educational benefits in their midst. They have secured the services of Mr. Dongal McMillan, Jr., of Pender county, who is well-known as an accomplished scholar, and we are glad to know that his school opens with line prospects . i j The people are still futher forwarding the cause of popular education by in stituting a system of public lectures at the Academy, during the Winter. These lectures will be. delivered free and by competent gentlemen, upon educa tional subjects. Nothing, is more im previngtoa community than for the citizens of it to listen to entertaining lectures during the long Winter eveu ings upon popular science and educa tion. Mr. McMillan will lecture at the Academy on the altcrnoon of the 12th hist., at 4 o'clock. 1 The public arc in vited to attend. A. Horse Tliict' on his Travels. W. H. Swain, who it will be remem bered was convicted in the Criminal Court of New Hanqver, some years ago, and sent to tho Penitentiary, has again been heard of as a law-breake'r. He served out hi3 term of three years and this is the first time, it seems, that he has been, heard f since his reiease Shcrift Taylor, of Brunswick writes us that ho received papers from the Shcrlffof Colleton county, S. C. for the arrest of one W. II. 'Swain, who is charged with having stolen! a mule Irom some one in that county, and was supposed to have made his way to this S,tato- On last Tuesday night it seems that he also stole a large bay horse from Mr. David Flowers, of Bladen county, and from Mr. Flowers place he went down Into. Brunswick among the cow thieves in Snowficld. It was on Wednesday he appeared there and on! Thursday ho left his horse and walk ed down near Shallotte and put up Tuesday night at the Dew place, in Lockwood's Folly town ship, on the Georgetown road. There he learned that parties lrom Bladen were after him and that they had pushed on towards South Carolina, He left that neighborhood before day ou Friday morning and walked back that night to where, he had . left the horse and has succeeded in flanking all who were in pursuit of him. Sheriff Taylor thinks that he has either passed through this city and gone East, on that be has made his way up towards Cumberland county, possibly returning to South Carolina. Swain is the same individual who was tried in Brunswick in 1883. for the murder of a colored man named Cobb, near Phoenix, on theC. C. R. R., and was acquitted. If he is caught thlS time . ,H ... . . . - he will probably make the acquaintance of Judge Lynch. I : Attention is invited to the advertise mcnt of Messrs.
